Which the US was trying for also, in its own way. Until it ran up its credit cards to the limit and trashed its industrial base.

Believe it or not, but to a lot of the world, living on a US dominated planet is just as undesirable as living in one dominated by the USSR. I prefer US domination, having experienced both, but I'm just a lazy left leaning capitalist at heart.
