Damaged rail cars were carrying “molten sulfur and asphalt,” according to a statement from Montana Rail Link.

Two cars carrying sodium hydrogen sulfate were part of the derailment but neither landed in the river “and initial air quality assessments have been performed and confirmed that there is no release event associated with those two cars,” the railroad said.

The derailment occurred around 6 a.m. Multiple tanker cars were damaged and are leaking “petroleum products,” according to Yellowstone County Disaster and Emergency Services.

The derailed Montana Rail Link train cars included “several hazmat cars,” the regional rail company said in an earlier statement. The train crew is safe and no injuries have been reported, the statement said.

Yellowstone County officials said there was no immediate threat and “precautions are being put in place.”

Lots of train derailments lately. For various reasons I am sure. But consider this, when Obama was in office, safety officials explained to him that trains are adding more cars making them longer. The braking system was not adequate because the first cars got the message to stop before the last cars. This gap in time caused buckling which details a train. Experts developed a new brake system that alerted all the cars at the same time to stop. Obama and congress approved and mandated that the new brake system be installed in trains and gave them until 2023 to make changes.
When Trump came into office he tore up the mandate and the new brakes were no longer mandated to be installed.

In 2018, representatives for Earthjustice, Waterkeeper Alliance, Sierra Club, Riverkeeper, Washington Environmental Council and Stand filed an administrative appeal of the Trump administration’s replacement rule, arguing it was based on outdated impact analyses that predate the current level of crude oil being carried by rail.
