George Will: Let the migrant children stay

I'll bet the right will want to bury this one quick.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefi...llowed-to-stay

The conservative columnist George Will on Sunday said the more than 57,000 migrant children who have crossed the border illegally should be welcomed to America with open arms.

Quote:
“My view is that we have to say to these children, ‘Welcome to America. You're going to go to school and get a job and become Americans,’ ” Will said during a panel discussion on “Fox News Sunday.”

Will said the country has more than enough space to accommodate the children, many of whom have made dangerous journeys from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

“We have 3,141 counties in this country. That would be 20 per county. The idea that we can't assimilate these 8-year-old criminals with their teddy bears is preposterous,” Will said.

Nope, Mr. Will is a father and realizes that some Republican has to stand up and represent the old saw that America is the land of opportunity. You come, you work your ass off, and you can improve yourself.

Too many think the best thing for these kids and America is to wave at them as they get deported. I also think, like George, the best thing for America is to give these kids a chance.

George Will is enough of a historian to know that we've assimilated starving, desperate people from day one from the Irish to Italians to Chinese against the objections of nativists and that these new immigrants have all contributed to what making America what it is today.

I'm more cynical.

I think he realizes that the GOP can't afford to keep losing the Hispanic vote by 44 points:

Quote:
Latinos voted for President Barack Obama over Republican Mitt Romney by 71% to 27%, according to an analysis of exit polls by the Pew Hispanic Center,

That too, but he's puts a nice veneer on it.

George can still turn-out a well-spoken column. But he's carried so much Republican water at this point that anything he writes must be considered soggy.
