Any Farmers out there?

After reading this Time Magazine article and remembering Willie Nelson and his Farm Aid concerts, I am asking: How real is this article?

Very real.

I live in an agricultural area north of New York and have family in farming since I was born.

Every farmer I know is very comfortable and knows his house and senate representative on a first name basis. (a big part of their income and or preservation of their income)

Example, the kid that lives behind me (mid 20s) just dumped $400,000 into an old farm house he bought and now has a million dollar home. He and his wife drive Mercedes. They drive pickups during the week. They spend the winters at their home in Florida.
