Russia brought in dozens more tanks, APC's and rocket-launchers last night during the negotiations, apparently hoping to establish a few more "facts on the ground."

I hope so too. Kiev push to depopulate the area has been checked.

That LA Times article is dripping with bias.

The article presented a hopeless picture. The skirmishes will continue.

Aren't historical biases amongst the roots of this Ukraine crisis?

Speaking of hope - I hope we can keep our noses out of this mess.

A ceasefire - if it comes true - is better than nothing. I think that is time to say that Hollande and Merkel deserve our respect.

It's been fleshed out a bit since this AM.

Indeed they do and I pray that their efforts bear fruit.

In all honesty, my biggest fear is that America will try to sabotage the agreement by whispering in Poroshenko's ear that "We can get you a better deal." I see McCain, Graham and Nuland as the likely provocateurs here but Obama himself may want to do this as well.

For the American leadership, this agreement will be seen as a threat to their pre-eminence in NATO, maybe even a sign that NATO is on the verge of dissolution, that Europe will go its own way from now on. America won't stand for this, IMO. Neither will the global MIC.

There are additional players. Hard right wing elements who might feel Poro
sold them out. It Is definitely an unhealthy situation to have an entire battalion - Asov Battalion - of extreme rightists.

The other side has the Russian nationalists who want complete separation
from Kiev. I do not think Putin wants the additional burden. Some of these
have been disciplined but there are always rogues.

Above it all the French and Germans see great potential trade with Russia,
the British leadership is bought by exiled Russian oligarchs, the Americans
are driven by McCainism and business elements led by the vice president.

The president needs to keep a cool head and recognize when he is being
goaded.

Fareed Zakarias' op ed in the Post today.

Has Vlad actually been able to peel the French and Germans from their alliances with America? I doubt it.

Of course when it comes to Ukraine/Russia Fareed sees only mischief from Russia and nothing from the other side.

Not peel off. However there is an underlying mistrust between Merkel and the
Americans. Her phone was bugged, she is an East German, she speaks Russian, Putin was once stationed in East Germany.

Germany and France more than the Americans need an economically positive Russia.
