Yes..... That is one of the stories I've heard.

Also heard his parents bought it for him.

Also heard his parents gave him the money and he made the purchase.

Wouldn't you think that with almost 24/7 coverage of this story by so many media outlets that this would be known by now? Sort of makes me want to not listen to/watch any of them and wait to read the history books.

Look, it's not like he was earning any money to go buy a big automatic pistol. If the rents give him the money, and he goes and buys the gun, it's fair to say they bought him the gun, isn't it? So, more or less same diff no matter what.

It just sexes up the story a little to make it sound like the folks selected the murder weapon and handed it to him....

Right.... Some media sources jazzed up the story ...... Which is why it is difficult to decipher the truth out of several versions.

Too many perceive them as adult toys. Not much different than custom automatic knives, high grade watches, high-end audio, ...
