While Netflix is not as good up here as the version you folks get, I must say that it is an incredible deal for what you pay. Really fun to watch older movies on it. Maybe not the kind that you would have laid out $5 for, but for "free" it's worth taking a chance.

Watched a movie on VHS recently, but just hated the picture quality. Yeah, the VCR is tired and likely needs some adjustment and cleaning, but we sure have come a long way from that.

VHS used MPEG1 encoding and that gave CD quality sound but picture quality about half that of regularr TV. MPEG2 was designed for digital TV transmission and 5.1 stereo sound so DVD picture quality is equal to regular TV. Some DVD players using HDMI to connect to an HDTV can us sample the DVD signal to 1080 line HDTV quality.
