Newly discovered quote from Romney

Meet the Press from December 16, 2007 (via Nexis):

ROMNEY: I’m a federalist. I don’t believe in applying what works in one state to all states if different states have different circumstances...Now, I happen to like what we did. I think it’s a good model for other states. Maybe not every state but most, and so what I’d do at the federal level is give every state the same kind of flexibility we got from the federal government as well as some carrots and sticks to actually get all their citizens insured. And I think a lot of states will choose what we did. I wouldn’t tell them they have to do our plan...

MR. RUSSERT: So if a state chose a mandate, it wouldn’t bother you?

MR. ROMNEY: I’d think it’s a terrific idea. I think you’re going to find when it’s all said and done, after all these states that are the laboratories of democracy, get their chance to try their own plans, but those who follow the path that we pursued will find it’s the best path, and we’ll end up with a nation that’s taken a mandate approach.

It'll be fun watching him try to finesse this as he does his preemptive, switcharoo health care talk tomorrow. Tee hee.

Now even Conservative darling Jim DeMint (R-SC) realizes he stepped in it in 2007 as an outspoken Romney supporter (and campaign co-chair), claiming he was hoodwinked back then by Romney (as he made speeches supporting RomneyCare). Tee hee.

What's a demagogue to do?

Typical. PPACA is chocked full of Republican ideas. Mandated Insurance, Tax on Cadillac plans, even the public option was, in part a brain child of Darrell Issa no less. These people are such liars and hypocrites it makes me want to puke.

It belongs at the State level. He should simply stick to his guns.

Does a state have a right to impose a mandate (presuming you think the Fed doesn't)?

Depends on the States' Constitution I'd think.

None of the State constitutions will address it directly (just as the US Constitution doesn't). About half the Federal Courts think that it is constitutional, the other half not. Stay tuned.

BTW, as you may know there's an ongoing Federal Appeals Court case in VA in which they've combined 2 lower court decisions into the appeal, and the 2 lower courts decisions were polar opposites.

Yay.

Things that are close to people belong at the State level with few exceptions. The ones that get it right would be obvious, and the ones that get it wrong, well, at least it's not all 50.

To everyone but Romney. He can't decide whether he got it right or wrong. He's trying to split the difference, an interesting exercise in doublespeak.

He feels like Hillary when Obama was hammering her over Iraq

Tough to be a moderate Rep (like Bush lol) right now.
