http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/...y.html?hpid=z1

To reduce over incarceration AG Holder is advocating relaxing requirements for long prison sentences for non violent drug offenders.

5% of the world's population and 25% of the total world's incarcerated, half of which are in for petty drug offenses.
Upchuck Grassley is already losing his chit over this, no surprise there. You would think that the powers that be have never heard of the Bastille.

There is a bill before the legislature here in MD to make possession of a small amount a civil penalty rather than criminal.

Probably my primary aggravation with Obama is his lying-ass, bait and switch bullshit when it comes to federal drug enforcement. This is not why we canvassed and voted for you Barack. The continuing harassment of medical marijuana dispensaries, the harassment and arrests of cancer patients for christ's fucking sake. It's despicable.

It's way, way, way past time. And it's way not enough.

Just legalize and tax it. Why continue to exasperate the damned problem?

About time indeed. This could be a huge benefit to the country if they did this.

I agree to some extent but 500 grams of coke is a lot and not for personal use. That's over 17oz I was a big dope head and I can't ever recall having more than 1/2oz at one time.

What does this shit cost now? 17oz has to be a lot of money.

It's not as if Holder is proposing to eliminate the penalties.

"Under current mandatory minimum guidelines, a drug offender convicted of possessing 500 grams of cocaine or 28 grams of crack would face a term of 63 to 78 months. Holder is proposing that the time in such a case be reduced to 51 to 63 months."

The proposal is to establish the current minimum sentence as the new maximum and set the minimum at 4 years, 5 months.
