The U.S. trade deficit in June widened by $3.2 billion and Trump’s own policies could be to blame.

After narrowing for three straight months, the U.S. trade balance with the rest of the world expanded in June to $46.3 billion as exports slowed. Exports rose sharply in prior months as the potential impacts from tariffs imposed by the Trump administration were front-run.

Economists at Barclays see Friday’s report as a harbinger of things to come, as the tax cuts boosting the U.S. economy will continue to grow imports while exports growth is likely to slow as firms deal with the impact of tariffs. Imports subtract from the GDP calculation while exports add to GDP growth.

The deficit climbed $3 billion to $46.3 billion in June from $43.2 billion in May, the Commerce Department reported Friday. That was the first increase in four months and the quickest uptick since November 2016.

The Congressional Budget Office slightly lowered its forecast for U.S. economic growth for this year, and warned of increasing uncertainty from American plans to widen tariffs.

The U.S. economy is projected to expand 3.1 percent this year, down from a previous forecast in April of 3.3 percent, the non-partisan group said in a report on Monday. The expansion will ease to 2.4 percent in 2019, unchanged from April’s projection, on slowing growth in business investment and government purchases, the CBO said.

“Despite the volatility in the rate of GDP growth in the first and second quarters of the year, CBO expects the momentum underlying that growth to largely continue into the second half of the year before slowing gradually in subsequent years,” the group said.

Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry and a drug policy expert at the Stanford University School of Medicine, said the United States is poorly positioned to have an impact in China’s illicit supply of fentanyl because of the ongoing feud over tariffs between the Trump administration and Beijing.

“They could help us, but they’re not going to,” said Humphreys, who spent a year in the Obama administration’s Office of National Drug Control Policy. The way to enlist the Chinese is “carefully, respectfully, and not on the front page or on Twitter.”
