LoL!

My Uncle was on the USS Bunker Hill when a Japanese kamikaze pilot hit it during the War of 1812.

Both these places were relatively safe, but most of our patients were Army guys that came in from the bush were they had gotten fucked up pretty bad, mostly by booby traps which we now call IED's.

I occasionally get a little twinge of survivors guilt, but mostly I'm glad it was them and not me, I'd be lying if I said anything different.
I'm often asked if I'm a 'Nam vet, I say no, I'm 'Nam era but being that I was air defense missile artillery and the 'Cong didn't have much of an air force, they didn't need me there. 'Nam vets tell me, "you didn't miss much" when I tell them. I spent most of the rest of my career as a dental tech, very REMF-ish.

I'd never say that.

Even though I was an REMF, Vietnam was a whole different world from serving stateside.

Good of you to admit that.

There are a whole lot of Veterans out there that embellish their service records. It's incredible how many former Green Berets and Navy Seals you run into. And virtually everyone of them was some goddamn REMF support troop that is lying his ass off. If you ask me, these are the worst examples for disrespecting the vets that actually saw action. I'd like to see every one of these lying wannabes thrown into jail.

Pardon my ignorance, Tom. But, what is an REMF?

I see.

My only close connection to the Vietnam War is my second oldest brother who was infantry and rarely talks about it. We always figured he was in the shit, because he shies away from guns, fireworks.....pretty much anything that goes "bang". And in an argument with a wannabe badass former brother in law, he was overheard saying; "If I owned a gun you would be dead. Don't think I would? I've killed so many people I lost count."

Safe in the rear...

Pops was a mail clerk attached to Div. HQ, definitely RE. I doubt that he ever shot at anyone. Like most he wouldn't not talk about it.
