People aren't really rational; reason, like everything else in political discourse, is mainly used tactically to discredit the opposition.

If people suspect you are basically against them why should they listen to you.
The knowledge that propaganda is a big part of the system compounds the problem.

This is psychological knee jerk reaction. Our behaviour is emotionally based and our parents did their best to teach/train us control. There is a really good reason not to discuss religion or politics.

Whell's idea is to bash the opposition using any weapon that comes to hand, even reason occasionally. But on no account may one ever,ever accept the reasoning of one's enemies.
