While living in Germany, I got to know
Joe Kittinger who held the record for decades as part of an Air Force experiment. He was also the first person to fly solo in a gas balloon across the Atlantic.
He gave a presentation to the Augsburg balloon club (the largest in Europe due to proximity to Hoechst AG where the got free gas for their balloons) about his solo trip across the Atlantic. The president of the club, the architect on a large hospital project that I managed, asked me to translate the presentation from English to German.
An aside - The architect, Herr Ruebner, have me, my girlfriend and my project engineer on the hospital job, a Christmas present of a certificate for a ride in his gas balloon the following Spring. On the day we went, there was a steady breeze from the south and we rode the balloon from Augsburg to just south of Wurzburg, about 200 km overall while his wife followed from below in her car & trailer.
