It's all about stupid automotive execs making stupid decisions. My family was big into the auto industry, in both blue collar and management capacities, union and non-union. I worked in the auto industry for twelve years, Pete.

Not every problem the U.S. auto industry has is the fault of government or organized labor. That's bullshit and always has been.

And, I blame Reagan for spreading the misconception.

Perhaps, but it is CAFE driving these sort of things. 700 lbs lighter? The new F150'll handle like a Ferrari

Remember Coca Cola.
Ford of course should remember the Edsel.

Its much lighter but for the most part cannot have dents pulled like steel. My wife hit a deer with her 06 Altima a few months after buying it new. Small nothing dent in the hood, easily a dent wizard fix. Body shop said hood and trunk lid were aluminum and cannot be pulled. Insurance company didn't at all argue replacement after hearing aluminum either.

Still won't stop the frames from rotting with all the road salt.

Makes sense that Ford would try a big fix for the F-150, since they sell so many of them they weigh super-heavy in the fleet economy ratings.

I was on a Ford lot a couple of weeks ago and noticed a Fusion with a 47 MPG rating. I was astonished.....

It's not a small car....

Meaning: Big savings will accrue to the Ford?

I don't know about now, but the big three used to sell small cars at a loss to keep their CAFE ratings up.

When the Navigator came out Ford was making more than 7 large PER UNIT. So, well to do folks buying gas guzzling SUVs subside regular folks in their cars

CAFE is a crock of shit IMHO. We should just slap an additional $2/gallon tax on motor fuels while reducing other taxes in a revenue neutral fashion. That would drive both innovation and fairness while reducing demand for foreign oil imports.
