This reminds me instantly of my "Deep Purple Live In California" (1974) dvd. By the way - a fantastic concert with a furious, almost insane Richie Blackmore, destroying a camera etc...

However, when the cameras pan to the huge crowd, you can see a Goodyear blimp several times in the sky.

My response was different, Richie's antics put me off Deep Purple completely.

Yes - at a certain point he exaggerated his ego show. Anyway - the Californina concert was breathtaking, Richie was not the only musician on stage.

I saw them at the Kennedy Center for the 'Smoke on The Water' tour. My ears rang for days.

I was at that show. Lots of grubby hippies in the KC Opera House that night.

Richie was so wasted at one show, he destroyed one of his his custom guitars instead of the smasher he had on stage for the finale.

I am so lost. How did this thread go from a blimp retirement to Richie Blackmore in one post?

Either that's a record for threadjacking or you guys are playing on a different ball field than I am.

Sorry, stuff happens.
There's an excellent site on lighter than air craft with interal pix of some of them and how they were operated at http://www.airships.net/ for those interested in this technology and it's history.
