The Fascination with Outdoor Cooking

I do not understand it. I whined about this last year - here we go again.

What is the point? Man spent centuries devising ingenious dwellings and appliances so he would no longer have to eat in the jungle/woods fighting off bugs, reptiles, hungry mammals, and be satisfied with charred leg of hyena.

Lighter fluid infused steak eaten while swatting gnats and flies not my idea of a pleasant meal.

Carry on.

Don't use lighter fluid.

I think steaks and chops turn out better if you sear them in a white-hot iron skillet and finish them in a 350 degree oven until the right degree of doneness. I use the grill almost exclusively for greasy meats (burgers, sausages), BBQ chicken and kebabs.

Pat, try turning that steak method around. In the oven first, then sear the outside. That way, the well doneness from the sear is very shallow and the not so well done is more even throughout the cut.

That tip comes from TRHEE, a contributor on AK. You may be familiar with him. (If not, look him up.)

I tried it that way and will not go back.

I've never seen the thrill. If we're having people over, sure, I'll cook on the grill. Mainly so the wife gets a break and can spend more time socializing. She still usually ends up doing more than half the prep work, what with side dishes and snacks and all.
I don't get any satisfaction from it, or fancy myself a great cook, as some guys seem to.
When we're out camping we usually use the RV stove unless it's a hot sunny situation and too warm inside to cook. Even then I often just whip out the Coleman two burner camp stove on the picnic table. Cooking over a campfire just isn't that much fun, with the smoke in your eyes and the burned fingers and all.

When my neighbors on both sides grill out on the same night it smells like half price day at the fuel dock.

Charred chicken in diesel sauce. Mmmmm.

Those chimney things that use news paper eliminate the need for lighter fluid and are well worth the $10 price tag. I agree with finnbow certain foods are much better off a Weber charcoal grill like salmon and chicken.

Hey, that pic is for me! I love making fire and burning things in it.

(Not quite that much, of course....) But it's just a thing. You either have it or you don't.
