BUT if will not open from the start menu under Other Programs. You have to drag the Word icon down to the tool bar at the bottom of your desktop and open office from there.

Sorry I cannot be anymore clear about WINE it is like mysticism to me. The windows version of Safari will install also.
I do have an MS Office disk...a very old one '97. And I've heard of WINE. That would be very cool if Word and Excel will run on Mint. Thanks.

WINE sets up a pseudo C: drive and allows windows programs to install by tricking the setup software. It has worked well for me with some small older programs. I even installed Spotify desktop which has no Linux version using WINE and it works great, even updates.

I want to try Mint since I've heard so many good things.

Which version of Mint did you install? It is a great Linux distribution and is easy to administer. The reason I ask is that LinuxMint will be releasing a new version at the end of May. This will be an LTS (Long Term Support) release with support until 2019. The current release, Linuxmint 16, support ends at the end of July. Of course, an unsupported release isn't going stop working, but I've found it better to stick with LTS versions.

Good luck with Linux
