The problem is the GOP is determined no matter the costs or results to eliminate the two party system.
It is very apparent they do not want to work in a bipartisan give and take with anyone. Everything for them has to be approved my the leader of the party. If not hey have been know to turn on fellow republicans who were outside of the leaders wishes.

Dark days ahead for the country. The GOP needs to place the blame onto others to deflect. Also to keep the hate and anger motivation as a distraction.

Yes we need a second party to maintain an adversarial two party system. Today's GOP is not that second party. As noted by Oerets they're out for single party rule and they aim to be that party.

We only have one political party. That's the problem. The other so-called party has become what Eisenhower said long ago:

I've been advocating a third party for most of my life. Unfortunately party affiliation seems to be as hard to change as any other belief system.

Third party no good as third party. Third parties never win. The aim must be to kill and replace one of the two.

Just make sure you shoot straight. Wouldn't want to kill the wrong party.

Weren't the Republicans a 3rd way back when?

I think the Whigs had already died. The point is, third parties never win. To win, you have to be the major party on your side of the political spectrum, and not have significant minor party competition there. So your aim cannot be to just be an 'alternative' third party, if you hope to win. You have to aim to become a major party. You basically have to seek the destruction of one of the majors, if two already exist.

The northen wing of the Whigs morphed into the Republican party thus saying farewell to the party's southern wing, resulting in a stronger party. Being a third, finnbow's Know Nothings were not a threat to fill the temporarily vacant two spot. In other words, the Whig party was not destroyed or killed.

The GOP is here to stay. It survived Nixon and thrived. It survived Trump and is still thriving. These angry blue cries for it's demise serve to reinforce it's strength.
