The Great Depression almost did in Capitalism as we know it. Because of who we are as compared to the rest of the west, to maintain power/control our upper/ruling class did not have to go very far toward so************************m to calm/subdue the dangerously disturbed masses. The Democrat's New Deal was better than the Republican's same old shit. We are now living with the consequence of how the New Deal was a bad deal for the working class when compared to the deals cut by the other western capitalist societies with their workers. Just look at our glorious health care system.

Yes but the chances of getting a system say like Sweden, Denmark or even Canada's are dead in the water in Congress. Even if they did pass something along those lines the Robert's court would declare it unconstitutional.

Roosevelt did the best he could under the circumstances.

Compared to western Europe the US is a country of barbaric knuckle dragging mouth breathers.

Roosevelt did what was necessary to maintain the status quo. You were duped by Reagan and it appears by the myth of the New Deal as well.

A very leftist reading. It was the right that stopped the implementation of the most radical part of the program (NRA). Interestingly, the NRA could have taken us far into the corporate state idea, usually thought of as fascist or right-wing.

I wouldn't call it a leftist view at all, pragmatic seem more like it and I would agree that keeping the ship of State afloat by whatever means deemed necessary was the prime directive in FDRs agenda..

"Pragmatic...keeping the ship of state afloat" is one thing. "Maintain the status quo" is another. The latter can be read as 'protect the privileges of the privileged,' and that's what I call a leftist reading.
