I think at the end of the day all Presidents have to be "likeable" in some way...even Democrats liked Ronald Reagan...hard not to like him. Had he been a conservative Democrat I am sure he would have gotten many Republican votes also. Same with Clinton and Obama...well liked Presidents with moderate policies that in general mesh well with voters in the middle of the spectrum.
Romney? Just too inauthentic. Even Richard Nixon could identify with his base of cloth coat Republicans and hard hat Democrats simply because of his hard scrabble self -made man back ground. And Nixon was smart enough to like dogs...remember Checkers?
