WWII British HC-4000 bomb in Frankfurt...

The biggest evacuation in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany occured today in Frankfurt - 70000 people had to leave their homes for about 12 hours.

The HC-4000 contains 1.4 tonnes TNT and has three detonators.

The pictures show on the left a police officer on the scene, in the middle the disposal expert René Bennart and on the right you can see a bit of the bomb.

Congratulations, Sir, you did a fantastic job! Thank you!

The problem is that there are still thousands of live bombs (not only in Germany) because the detonators will never corrode due to a lack of oxygene in the area they are located. The Barking Monster's Nazi Germany will never stop to fuck our contemporary livelihood.

Damn. A really big one.

How did they deal with it? Remove the explosive, or defuse it?

They defused the three detonators. After that they got the tuff exploding in small harmless explosions.

Glad to read it turned out OK. Today there is technology to go inert after so any years. IIRC landmines are equipped that way now.
There is a town in France or Belgium forget right now, setting on top of an unexplored ordinance store from WWI set to destroy trenches. Two of the three worked the other sill awaits discovery or destruction.

They hope 'harmless.' Glad it worked!

I'm envisioning a machine that extracts the contents a teaspoon at a time and conveys it to a detonation vessel--heavy steel, open on top--put put put put put put put put.....

Having managed a lot of military construction in Germany for 8 years, I can't tell you how many times bombs, small arms ammunition, and mortar and artillery rounds were unearthed while excavating on my project sites. The first call was always to the local Sprengkommando (bomb disposal unit). A similarly huge bomb was just discovered and rendered inert in Augsburg just a few months ago.

Pat, I know that you like the German language...

The official word for Sprengkommando is

Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst
