If anyone had predicted that in the early part of the twenty first century the Soviet Union would collapse, people would have thought:

a). The speakers nuts or
b). The only way that could happen would be as a result of all out war.

Things have a habit of happening in the way least expected. The Russians did not win the space race, but they DID start it. Sputnik caught everyone by surprise, not just because the Russians did it but how the hell, with their only just post WW2 technology, they managed to do it first.
