When arguing in favor of slavery planters would point out that northern factory/mill workers were wage slaves.

When employers have the right to work 'wage slaves' until they drop dead, and whip them to death if they refuse, then I'll agree 'wage slave' and 'chattel slavery' are the same thing.

I agree. Wage slavery is generally the individuals fault to some extent.
I think you will find very few who studied hard and learned skills with some value have that problem.

The argument being made wasn't that they were the same thing, it was that slaves were better off.
FWIW, only an idiot planter would work his workforce to death, which would result in losing his plantation to his creditors.

I'm sure there were some cruel slave owners. But, logic suggests that would be the exception rather than the rule simply because it is counter productive.
My cousin has a bill of sale for a slave. It was a little in excess of $500.
Can you imagine what that would be in todays dollars ? I bet he didn't do that just to beat him all to hell.
And no, for the morons on here I am not defending slavery.

Let's just say I've never heard of northern mill workers sneaking off at night, with plans to go south and become slaves.

Keep telling yourself that. At least one will be convinced.
Just the ownership of another is itself cruel, period! Of little consequence treatment.

Which is why the planters' wage slave argument didn't hold water.

OK.
But being a wage slave still sucks the big one.
