I'm pretty sure it's still illegal to be under the influence and packing.
The new law, which goes into effect July 1, allows licensed gun owners in Georgia and visitors from 28 other states to bring a gun into a bar without restrictions and carry a firearm into some government buildings that don't have security measures. It also allows school districts to decide whether they want some employees to carry a firearm and religious leaders to decide whether to allow licensed gun owners to tote to their church, synagogue or mosque.

So, you think it's a good thing if all the drunken patrons pull out their shooting irons and start wailing away. Feckin' brilliant.

Of course, this scenario is far more likely in a situation where it's legal to walk around with a gun.

It is still illegal to carry while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. People are allowed to drive their cars to and from bars, even though driving under the influence is illegal.

So a bad guy walks into a bar carrying a gun. Other patrons are armed as well. The bad guy starts shooting and others pull out their weapons.... At some point, law enforcement arrives and, since everyone is armed and shooting, law enforcement must consider them all bad guys and in the gun fight that ensues.... Innocent people are killed by the bad guy, stray bullets , and law enforcement.

The potential for harm has been accelerated.

Now.... If the bad guy didn't have access to the gun in the first place.... This scenario would be different.

In places like Georgia, Mississippi, et al?

Damn right I do. I love it. It's an idea whose time has come. Long overdue, actually. In fact, I think the next law they pass should make murder in redneck bars perfectly legal. Call it the "Sumbitch Asked for It" law

It's up to the bar property owner whether to allow patrons to carry or not. I would imagine 95% will not allow their patrons to carry. They may, however, decide to allow only their employees to carry.

Bars that choose to let anyone carry will risk the legal consequences of that decision, as well as the probable loss of revenue as many will no longer enter.

Bars that choose not to let anyone carry will risk the legal consequences of that decision.

Patrons who choose to disregard a no carry policy will risk the legal consequences should the fact that they are carrying become known. (Note that if it becomes known due to them using said weapon against a threat to their lives, it may well be worth the consequences)

People who carry while under the influence risk the legal consequences of that decision, just as does someone who gets behind the wheel while drunk.

I don't know but some people seem to feel real manly getting drunk with their weapons.

Kill em all, let God sort em out.
