History of Corporations
Just a survey.
How many of you are familiar with the history of corporations as a legal structure? We didn't always have them in their present form. They used to be considered dangerous.
This might be an interesting topic for conservatives that are interested in the old days.

Thanks.
This is important stuff. It is the context that legislators work in.
The Less Taxes, More Filling stuff is what they feed us to keep our eyes off the ball. That and abortion. FFS we have been debating that crap forever while the world passed us by.

I still believe the idea of unresricted corporate growth and consolidation is very dangerous.
History has shown that when private wealth grows too powerful, it seeks to usurp democracy and enslave the populace. My father got to experience the "Company Town" life (Morgan Park, Minnesota) at an early age and had no use for people who waxed nostalgic for those days. A pro-labor, FDR Democrat until we planted him in the ground, was he.
To answer your question, I'm not sure exactly when the corporation became a legal entity. It had to be a long time ago, because I am aware that the founders were loathe of what was the largest corporation in the world at the time; The East India Company
Morgan Park;

"Residents of the town were expected to keep their homes in a generally conservative and well kept manner. Failure to do so, and the Morgan Park Company would accomplish the task(s) for you and deduct accordingly from your paycheck."

Also, to get fired from the mill meant being uprooted entirely. The company owned your house, the school, the stores, the banks and even the local church. Lose your job and you were no longer welcome in any of these places and any debts owed would be confiscated if possible. Company goons would literally escort you out of town.
Some of us romanticize this period and dream of returning the country to it.
I think these imbeciles are paralyzed from the neck up.

Blue,
Morgan Park is an interesting story. I never heard of it.
You know the guy on AK that is refurbing the trailer to head to North Dakota? The other day I browsed the web for more info on the boom town and saw that Halliburton is building corporate housing there. What was old is new again.
If history is any clue we have a long row to hoe to root out the wild corporate weeds.

Yep. He's rolling right into an Orwellian dystopia and doesn't realize it. Or, maybe he does, but just needs a job real bad. At any rate, this is truly what's going on.
The maddening part is that it is being foisted upon us under the guise of "Freedom".

As an aside, I remember watching Reagan make a speech on television, circa 1982, with my father who retired in 1984. When the speech was over, he looked at me and said;
"I might be able to get mine before it all comes down. But, I don't envy YOU at all."
Make of that what you will.

I once mentioned the good old days to my father and he looked at me and said
"I never want to return to dirt floors, no indoor plumbing and oil lamps for light. Having a horse and a plow and knowing if the horse broke it's leg the family just may starve. Nothing good about those days, son"
I fear that is where we may be heading if we are not very careful in decisions we make in the next few elections.

The closeness of this century to the nineteenth or the early twentieth is a lot closer than many people realize despite the accoutrements of modernity.
