Actually, many states have some version of this. They were most popular during WWII, when the national guard troops were all federalized and overseas. Nowadays, they are mostly pretty pitiful remnants. The Feds wont equip them, the states barely fund them, the volunteers are guys who want to play soldier but can't get into the National Guard. They don't get paid to drill, only if they are activated.

Of course, DeSantis if perfectly capable of taking this concept and making a Reich Wing paramilitary out of them. But being state sponsored, they'd be legal, which grassroots militia units absolutely are not.

Governors already have state police they can hand pick and use as thugs.
It happened in Arkansas in the late 1980s. The Florida State Guard would be more of a hit squad. No police duties, just follow orders when the time came. Last edited by BigElCat; 12-04-2021 at 12:15 PM.
