Some of Putin's soldiers hearts aren't in the fight. Declining morale can be contagious.

I think you mean 'morale'; morals can decline, but you don't need them to fight a war.

... but yeah, if soldiers don't understand what they're fighting for they lose enthusiasm. If Russian troops move into the cities and see all the civilian damage they've inflicted will they still be anxious to fight? With the rising protests in Russia itself Putin's efforts to hide the truth from the Russian people may start failing.
