Where there are people, there are groups. Individuals always are in some sorts of groups, unless they are persecuted, or unhealthy.

Being social animals, humans tend to clump together in groups but the "basic unit" of any species is the individual. We are all born as individuals and exist as such until we are integrated into some sort of group.

The persecuted and unhealthy are more often than not members of groups. An example are the homeless living in Dallas who use the library's public internet access.

Some people are persecuted and/or unhealthy.

Some people who are persecuted and/or unhealthy cannot, for a number of possible reasons, function as members of groups.

I believe the latter subset constitutes nearly all humans who are not members of groups.

Groupthink, a term coined by social psychologist Irving Janis (1972), occurs when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressures lead to a deterioration of “mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment” (p. 9).

Lots of folks have problems functioning within a group. Doesn't mean they're not part of one.
