Like those soldiers the Japanese left behind on various islands in the Pacific who did not know the war had ended until many years later.

The Old Believers are still out there. They're in some ways like the Amish in their eschewal of technology but not as dogmatic about it. Pretty dogmatic about religion though. Saw a documentary on RT* about a family with a young daughter who wanted to be a dancer. Not a popular choice.

Amazing how powerful fear of the outside world can be. Which, if you think about it, that's exactly what it was. They feared religious persecution, so they hid themselves away...(And who can blame them?). Just as the Japanese soldiers, that Ice mentioned, feared being discovered by enemy soldiers.

Which makes the comparison with the Amish kind of awkward. The eschew modern technology and modern ways........but they don't hide.

Regard,
Dave

The Old Believers don't hide any more either. They haven't for a very long time. The family in the story hid out at a time when Stalin was trying to wipe out the influence of religion.

These people fled for their lives. Had they not been so isolated, they would have learned decades earlier that Stalin was dead and they were no longer being hunted.

Religion has really reasserted itself in Russia. Hell, three performance artists, "Pussy Riot", just got tossed in prison for "hooliganism". Their crime was conducting a disrespectful performance in a church.

Iirc Solzhenitsin mentions Old Believers, some female members refused to work (gulag) on Easter Sunday (cutting and hauling logs by hand), their punishment was standing waist deep in freezing water holding their arms out.

They didn't cave in.
