Some gems in there. I haven't pulled out Zebop in years and years.

Found this on the Classic Speaker Pages.
"The grill panels on the AR-4x were hot-glued *and* stapled to the front speaker baffle. You should look for the white-painted staples and carefully remove them before prying-up the grill panels. Using a putty knife with a wide blade, you can then go around the edge of the grill and gently pry until it begins to pop loose. Be careful not to pull too hard on the grill, as the hot glue sticks to the linen grill material on the underside of the frame, and it can tear the material. The grills on original AR-4xs are the premium beige-linen versions; some later 4xs and all of the AR-4xa models had the less-desirable white-linen grill material." --Tom Tyson
I do recall also reading a thread on AK about this.
BTW, congrats on a pretty good score.

If it's hot glue, wouldn't a carefully-applied heat gun help with that pry-off part?

Thanks! After my wife goes to work I will look at the staples . I was looking at a solo Infinity Reference 2000.3 and turned around and saw the AR badges looking at me. I was not even thinking about going there until the last minute.
There are some RSLs there but they need to be refoamed and they want $45.
I want to hook these up to my tube amps when I change the caps.

Hair dryer and slow. I've never seen the staples on any 4ax not saying they could not be there so do look. Start at a corner, bottom and place a rag under the wood lip, a small screw driver in slot and lift. Working around another screw driver in the opening. GO SLOW the board will snap.

Thanks Barney....the staples are there but I do not think you remove them...
you have to work around the edges. I guess you have to take the pot out and take it apart and clean it with white vinegar and salt, then give it a deoxit bath.
I hooked up one the tweeter is gone but it sounded ok. These are really small speakers. Smaller than a KLH Model Seventeen.

I just gave a set away last winter with a-lot of other gear to clear out the spare room to set up a nursery. Mine were AR4x-a's and they were velcro'd on. Didn't think they were going to come off but they did by lifting one corner at a time and not letting them slip back to the velcro when I started on another corner. Not sure if the velcro was factory or someone else put it in there, but didn't see anything else that may have held the grills in place before. AR4x-a may be different than yours though.
