A lot of the white, blue collar labor force diffidently identifies as Republican. There are still racial issues in some of the unions too, even though those are going away.

In New York City: It was really difficult for non whites to enter certain unions. Although such unions officially supported the Dems, their members from my personal observation were mainly republican.

The racial issues have really got better in later years.
