I rescued a black snake that got baled up in a straw bale at our farm once-He/she/it was cut pretty bad on its side, I held it up close to me, talked softly to it, scratching its head, which seemed to calm it down, or maybe it was in shock. Anyhow, I carried it to the edge of the field, put it in some tall weeds, & it was gone like a shot.

To answer my own question, I think the Dad should be doing some serious time.

I remember when I was a kid, I caught a garter snake about a foot long and kept it in a fruit jar. Then I took it to school, as I thought it was pretty interesting, and thought that the other kids might get a kick out of it.

Well, don't know if the other kids got a kick out of it or not, but the teacher sure as hell didn't. As soon as I pulled the fruit jar out of my sack, she went totally bonkers, grabbed the jar, and threw it and the snake out of a 2nd story window. Screwed up the snakes back so it could barely crawl.

So I took my poor snake to my Grandparents house to recover, and turned it loose in the hollow tree where my tree house was. Gramps spied it, and chopped it up with a hoe.

I can only imagine what would have happened if it were a 9' python. My guess is that a mob, armed with everything from a shotgun to a double bit axe, would have descended on it, and went to work "like they were killin' snakes".

Even today, with 911, I would imagine that 99% of the local cops would shoot it on sight.

And I probably would too, even in town.
