I'm not sure a pragmatic solution is possible, it's so emotionally charged.
Which is a serious national security issue in this globalized age. We've got to know who's coming in.

I have seen reports that Hugo Chavez is supplying forged papers to people from the middle east identifying them as South Americans, Lord knows if they are true.

IIRC it was on CNN whatever that is worth.
I don't pay attention to net rumours as I agree with whoever it was that said;
The Internet is 50% BS, 45% rumour and 5% facts.

I think you may be weighting the percentage of facts on the heavy side. And you've totally disregarded innuendo.
But your overall analysis is spot on.

As with the "Why do so many people hate Obama?" issue, I wonder how much of the absolute hysteria over the immigration issue is racially motivated?
Now, before anyone gets fired up, I'm not suggesting that the whole thing is about race. I too am concerned about this situation. I am concerned about a border that seems to be so porous that people just walk right in. I'm concerned about the drug cartels, the crime and the "people smugglers" that seem to have absolutely no concern for the well being of their "cargo". I am concerned about the impact on American workers and the US economy.
But, for some folks, it appears to run a little deeper than that...............

Remember posting the video of Rachel Maddow's commentary on race as a political issue. Too many find it politally expedient to instill fear of "them" in their constituency. Not exactly the way to promote a national common purpose.
