Blue, some would be armed, some wouldn't. Ammo would run out pretty quick though, then in comes a big guy named Bubba. How cute are you?

Jon, it's a great idea. I'd need to be able to see it though. I've been planning on joining Netflix. If you read, Niven and Pournelle are hard scifi masters of chaos. 'Lucifers' Hammer' should be a movie. Ever see the old 'Panic in Year Zero"?

Boy John, the older Americans sure had a hard grip on reality.

I stopped at the town setting for 'Mayberry' in NC a few years back. Bring a gun if you go

Re: Pepper spray.

There's a big difference in the lethality of pepper spray and a handgun. There's a big difference in the risk to bystanders. There's a big difference in how the presence of each weapon might escalate a situation. There's a big difference in how each weapon might get used against the victim in the event of a struggle. There's a big difference in the potential end result from the use of each of those weapons under conditions of extreme stress and the way that stress affects different people with different emotional make-ups and different levels of training and expertise.

I'd rather have my daughter defend herself from a drunken, aggressive, potential rapist with pepper spray than with a handgun.

@Flac. The "Bear Repellant" is far stronger than the pepper spray, or at least that's what the guy at Bass Pro told me. It's a much bigger can, and reaches about 20' to 25', that I can tell you for sure. If I had a daughter in college, or anywhere else for that matter, I would urge her to carry pepper spray as well. But, a gun? Probably not. If her school was that bad, she'd be going elsewhere.

@JonL. True dat. That's one thing I have considered about guns. What if a young woman, in a potential rape situation, should have the weapon taken from her by her assailant? With pepper spray, at least no one gets killed. Including the young woman and any innocent bystanders.

BTW, I keep the Bear Repellent on my headboard when I'm not out on the bike. If someone should ever break in when I'm home, they'll get a face full of something designed to knock over a 1000 pound bear. And, I would imagine that's pretty unpleasant.

Depends. Some bad guys, particularly if maddened, will ignore pepper spray. Ask a cop. I'd say taser. [edit - for the girl. Bear, you're screwed ]
