You know, from the moment I heard of digital radio, I had hoped all of the corporate trash would go to satellite and leave the analog AM & FM to the local little guys. If you think about it, this could get fun. On ebay, I saw some low powered FM Stereo transmitting equipment going for less than you would think. Still not cheap, and then there's licensing and all that, but..............Hmmmmm.

Indeed! It's a thought that's tumbled around in my head too.
BTW as per custom at Pol Chat and all -feel free to go off on a tangent in the thread- I for one welcome it.

You're being disengenuous Rob, I have it on good authority that you were a roadie for Woody Guthrie during your misspent youth...

Cool! I've seen those transmitter deals too while surfing around eBay.
I liked that flick 'Pirate Radio' and dig the little bit of decommercialization in the FM band.
My local one, KOCI, like DRay's in KC are all over the map in what they play. They just went from a Joe Walsh ballad to Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple!
This station has a roster of sponsors, some of which buy airtime for adverts. It's local businesses (the responsible ones) that do the heavy lifting in keeping this cool group of community minded music lovers on the waves. They also solicit donations from the public.
I'll have to ask my new friend, the director of KOCI how that all breaks down but even in a political wasteland like Newport Beach/Costa Mesa there are some good folk (republicans even ) willin' to put some effort into a good cause.

IMHO, the definitive version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, by Jeff Buckley.
