I am for replacing tipping with any system which can reasonably reward workers.

In a tipping environment too many workers feel that the consumers owe them.

Just a bad atmosphere.

Don't be disingenuous Barb.

When you have to depend on tips for over half your compensation it's a helluva lot different than working for a steady paycheck.

Not being disingenuous ...... There are many "prestigious" jobs that one must sell their soul to be successful. We each have our threshold ..... I'd rather be a waitress and do a good job than sell my soul for a fancy title.

We're talking about $2.13 an hour before tips Barb.

That's slave labor.

U.S. restaurant chain launches 'no tipping' test, raises server wages instead

What are you, one of those demanding assholes that runs your waitress ragged and then stiffs her because she didn't refill your coffee cup 17 times?

http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm

Which is what they make in SOME states..... According to your link.

The ones that pay full minimum wage before tips are in purple.

That's 7 states.

Out of 50.

The ones that pay $2.13 are in blue.

That's 17 states.

The others (green) pay somewhere in between.

Mostly on the lower end of in between.

And by the way, what's so great about getting paid minimum wage to wait on tables?

It's not an easy job.

I wouldn't do it for $50 bucks an hour.

Give it up Barb.

You're not going to get me to take a piss on restaurant workers.

Tom.... I don't expect you to change your mind. This isn't about winning or losing in a conversation. In healthy debate, participants exchange points of view, typically without bad feelings. It's a good way to solidify ones stance and hear other ideas.

Someone as smart as you should be able to understand that concept.

This argument is an old one for me. Having a Brother who owned restaurants and myself once worked in food services. I'm a very good tipper but know first hand doing a good job, going the extra mile has little effect on the cheap.
I'm all for proper pay for the workers. Do not buy into the train of thought it will effect service or increase prices. Yes prices will go up but you will know the actual costs upfront right? Not the meal plus tip hidden from view. The argument of getting better service is weak in my view, if so have the server move on. Only keep those who fit.
The tip for me is a way the restaurants get the customer to subsidize their overhead. The customer will pay the same amount in reality it is the restaurants who use the weak arguments to protect their cash flow.
