I find these excuses kind of lacking, especially when coming from the most profitable business on the planet. As in many other businesses, some products can get sold at a loss, to be made up for in the profits of other products. Even our company does this. We sell make some products at a loss just to get the highly profitable business of other products we make for the same company.

I got that message when I bought my first printer over 20 years ago. The printer came with an installed set of cartridges and a complete set of replacements. The whole shootin' match cost less than the retail price of the ink that came with it.
