The logic seems to go: if enough people believe it, it must be true. But just because millions of people don't believe that 153 + 153 equals 306, that doesn't change the certainty of the calculation. The belief that 153 + 153 equals 269 does not provide evidence to change the sum from 306.

I'm thinking the new math they began teaching back in the 70s just might have something to do with this.
