As usual articles like these omit/skirt the essentials. The employment and support of white nationalism by whichever party when dealing with foreign countries. This is usually couched under "Exceptionalism".

The whites, who more than any other group drank this exceptionalism cool ade, now suspect that locally they are being played by both parties.

The Republican power center and voter base was centered in the North and the Democratic in the South until the late 1950s and1960s when it began to shift. No more "Solid (Dem) South" meant a merging of ideologies and the movement of Evangelists into the GOP. Christian Nationalism and the Lost Cause mythology have become one.
