More Trouble Down In Texas

"Texas violated a court order intended to preserve voting rights. And it got caught.
Earlier this month, the Justice Department informed a federal court that Texas is violating a recent court order that sought to keep the state from disenfranchising voters. After an appeals court struck down the state’s voter ID law, a common form of voter suppression favored by conservative lawmakers, the state agreed to be bound by an order that would permit voters to cast a ballot in the 2016 election if they “cannot reasonably obtain” photo ID."

"Despite this order, Texas published press releases, voter education materials, and training manuals for poll workers that effectively stated that a voter without ID cannot vote unless it is literally impossible for that voter to obtain a photo ID. Thus, for example, a voter who had to make multiple day long trips to a government office and make burdensome document requests to obtain an ID would not be able to vote, under Texas’ standard, unless that voter was willing to jump through all of these considerable hoops.
On Tuesday, Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, the judge overseeing this case, weighed in on Texas’ defiance of the court order. And, if the order she issued on Tuesday is any indication, she’s pissed." TP

Why shouldn't a US voter be required to us a legitimate ID ? Should Germans, Italians or whomever, visiting from other countries be allowed to vote in our elections?

Now I do see a legitimate point that some cannot afford the cost to get say a state ID. Those should be provided free, or for a reduced charge, to those in need.

People from Germany or Italy or anywhere can't just wander into a polling place and vote. The thing called 'registration' exists. Always used to be, you didn't show an ID, but you recited your name and address, and the poll worker had to find what you said on the list for that polling place. Then, if you weren't marked as having voted already, you got to vote.

Simple. No problems.

Exactly. Conservatives have always cried foul when they lose. They bitched that JFK only won because in certain places even the dead vote Democratic. But, ask them to prove it........................

Yeah they are making it harder to get an actual id.


There is no voter fraud crisis anywhere in the United States. PERIOD.
It is not a very efficient way of stuffing ballot boxes. The concept that it exists is how Republicans justify trying to cut out certain demographics from voting.

I have yet to produce an id when I vote. But then again we don't have Republicans in my statehouse trying to stop African-Americans and Latinos from voting. The fact that we have massive voting lines in GOP states like Florida should be proof enough that something is going on with even the allocation of polling locations. I wait about 20 minutes here and my house is less than a mile away from where I vote.

Mine is about a 5 minute drive straight up RR 97. Maryland provides ID cards to all registered voters.

The point is if your illegal why should you get to vote. Don't like it ? They can go back to where they came from and vote there.

Every state I have lived in has required a ID of some type to vote.
