San Francisco Political Consultant Charged With Explosives Possession
A San Francisco political figure has been charged with possessing explosives following a manhunt that ended in his arrest Monday.
Ryan Kelly Chamberlain II allegedly had in his apartment an improvised explosive device "designed to maim or kill," according to a federal criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday.
The FBI issued an alert Sunday saying that Mr. Chamberlain, a local campaign consultant and social-media strategist, was wanted and considered armed and dangerous.
According to the criminal complaint, FBI agents found components of an IED in a messenger bag, including a model rocket motor lodged within a green powdery substance in a jar; ball bearings and screws "believed to be intended projectiles"; an igniter; and a circuit board configured as a remote-control receiver.
Mr. Chamberlain was apprehended by San Francisco police and FBI spokesman Peter Lee said "we do not believe at any time the public safety was threatened."
Mr. Lee declined to say what tipped agents off, but an apparent suicide note was posted on an iCloud account bearing Mr. Chamberlain's name. The source of the message couldn't be independently verified.
