Oil and the automobile industry. Taxes good!
People walking - taxes bad.....

I love to walk and we're definitely made for it. My house was built in 1938/39, at the edge of urban Dallas. Within a two mile radius of there are six grocery stores, three banks, numerous decent eateries and a killer DVD rental shop. Didn't even start the car up yesterday.

I love walking and riding my bike also.
Unfortunately I didn't consider that where I live now. I live mostly in the country. Small subdivisions surrounded by grazing pastures. Cows graze on the other side of my back fence and the area is lovely, but the roads are hilly, narrow and windy and too many folks drive like idiots on them. I'm talking 60 MPH on posted 30 MPH roads. I don't' feel safe walking them much less riding on them. I'd be killed.
There are small convenience stores close enough to walk...but again.......

I've been using a local rails to trails instead of the streets. Much much safer, except for sinkholes.

And, being an old railroad right of way, you won't hit more than about a 4% grade. Easy for us old codgers.

Or to the train station.
There was a rail trail that passed maybe 1/3 mile from the last place I lived in Maryland. It ran from the northern suburbs of Baltimore to the center of York, PA. It did pass near convenient shopping destinations but only near the two ends of the trail which was around 40 miles long. I lived pretty near the midpoint so not much good for shopping or commuting. Great for exercise though.
