200 Years Ago Today

The British attacked Washington and set fire to the White House, House & Senate Chambers, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court.

Back in the late '60's, my parents considered buying the pictured house in Brookeville, MD where President Madison took refuge from the British attack. My mother and siblings protested to my father because it was too far out in the sticks at the time. I wish he would have ignored us.

Then there was the biggest, baddest, meanest rip snortin' mother of all storms raining down the wrath of the titans on those poor Red Coats.

That would be the Battle of Baltimore. Spent some good times as a youngster at Fort McHenry, where the British fleet was repulsed.

"Throughout the events of that day, a great storm blew into the city the night of 24 August 1814, and it continued to get worse, even tornadoes came down from the sky, terrifying the troops who felt God was not happy about what was happening in Washington City."" Wiki

I saw "Red Coats" and then all I saw was red. Grin was for my hometown mention. Misplaced enthusiasm reined in, head hung, and tail tucked.
