Without disparaging engineers in some branches of engineering it is recognized that to be truly productive they need one or two damn good technicians helping them.

Nimble and highly adaptive minds are always needed. I have seen more than my fair share of close minded people who never can give an ounce of credit to anyone that works outside of their specialty.

If ten people go to college, get their degrees, and afterwards go into ten different fields and achieve to the best of their abilities, then their college experience was a success. Too often, we assign failure and success labels to people based on how much $$ they make.

"And it’s dangerous to forget that in a democracy, college isn’t just about making better engineers but about making better citizens, ones whose eyes have been opened to the sweep of history and the spectrum of civilizations."

Great article Dave, I quoted the bit above simply because it reflects my own sentiments regarding an education, mine is still a work in progress.

I know what you mean, Rob. Real education consists of putting together history and biology and psychology and literature and physics and everything else into an integrated understanding of humanity on its planet. And that is generally not a thing taught in any class. You have to do that in your own head.

Right and since I am paying for it at the local school level I feel I have a right to complain. Especially in light of the fact that when a new business moves into the area they often negotiate a tax holiday

Complaining is the most basic human right.
