Although not an Apple user, I have been well aware of Job's role as an innovator. The WaPo had an interesting take on his role as a social innovator. It will indeed be interesting to see what the view of his legacy is when we are another ten years down the road (eons in geekdom).

Don't fret. We geeks like the term now. I was having a difficult time finding my preferred high quality vinyl pocket protector. I finally found them at a small independent stationary store and bought all they had. The new model is too thin and the seams always split. I just load them and toss them in my briefcase and don't actually use them in my shirt pocket. I do have a leather pen holder that I sometimes wear on my belt. It is usually loaded with a Mont Blanc Diplomat, an 0.7mm Mont Blanc Mechanical pencil, and a pen type Steadtler eraser. It is very geeky and somewhat pretentious, but I like the convenience. I like pens and pencils.

I use the free one's the pen companies send me. My current favorite is a fat, Cross style that uses the good refills.
Guess I should buy another 100 cheap pens. After 15 years, they've quit sending me freebies. Most everybody I know has a cheap Swiss Army knife with my name on it in their glove box, they come in handy when you don't have twist offs.

I never was trendy enough to fork out the extra bux for the Apple logo. Or even IBM.
I'm a clone man, myself.
But that's the way us tightfisted hillbillies operate.

I've always used the IBM clones myself. The microsoft-based software seems to be compatible with all or my correspondents. My son, on the other hand, swears by Apple. His anecdotal evidence is somewhat convincing. His first Macbook lasted him for 5 years, and we just replaced it. He has never has problems with viruses, with internet use, with media, or with the office type software he uses. I would certainly trade what I am typing on now (Two year old Dell laptop) for his Macbook.
As far as geekdom, I can only aspire. Relative to the others in my office, my computer skills make me a geek. Relative to those who truly understand these machines, I am a novice.

I use both and also used to use Sun, SGI, and IBM Workstations. I made a lot more money working on Windows machines than Apples. I rarely yell at Apple machines, but sometimes feel a need to launch a Windows machine out the window. Either one will get the job done, but the Apple stuff is just more elegant both in form and function IMHO. I'm a Unix/Linux person and didn't use an Apple until they moved to Unix. I did use a Next machine whose OS underlies the OS in Apples OS X.
Do you remember when Wordperfect was standard in Law Offices?

A few courts still require proposed orders to be in wordperfect. I started with wordperfect for DOS back in '86. Used the windows version for a few, before switching to word in the late '90s. I remember being amazed at how much freedom having a laptop gave me. Several times it freed me up to visit my parents or in-laws back in Oklahoma - just kept writing when I got there and e-mailed the finished product back to the office. Nowadays, the courts REQUIRE everything to be electronically filed. That cuts out the need to send it back to the office.
We recently took over a case that had several boxes of documents. Now I carry most of the file with me on my laptop.
While I still marvel at what the increases in technology have allowed me to do, it is an expectation with my kids' generation. To me, that says a great deal about what Jobs and his peers have accomplished.

D-Ray

Jobs was an amazing guy. A true innovator. The kind of person that changes the world----and always for the better. A real shame that we lost him at such an early age.
I'm sure some Gordon Gekko type will be along shortly to suck the life out of Apple, stuff all of the loot in his own pocket and blame the tragic loss on everyone but himself.

Guess I am just a Luddite at heart. I hear all this talk about how he changed the world with the ithis and ithat. We don't own any of them and don't miss any of them. We can also know that we did not contribute to the deaths of any Foxcomm workers.

You know Rob, you can be a real hard ass at times.
And us Philistines admire that.
