Is America developing "Newtown Amnesia"

The fiscal cliff lunacy has driven the Newtown Massacre from the headlines it appears. Will our leaders once again drop the ball and blithely ignore the elephant in the room? Assault weapon sales have enjoyed a crazy huge increase in sales since the Sandy Hook Elementary school tragedy and no one in the media is talking about it. I for one hope that changes now that the so called fiscal cliff BS is over.
I know it is an uncomfortable topic but when do we do something about making these military grade weapons unavailable?

Agreed. Too easy to forget the important issues in this culture of sound bites and 24/7 news.

By the way, MoveOn has a petition going to help convince Walmart they don't need to sell high powered weapons like the one used at sandy hook.

Here's what you'll be sending to Wallyworld's corporate hoods.

"Subject: Tell Wal-Mart: Stop selling assault rifles
Hi,
I signed a petition to Michael Duke, CEO, Duncan MacNaughton, Executive Vice President & Chief Merchandising Officer, and 2 others which says:
"To Wal-Mart corporate leadership: Please put public safety ahead of profit, and join Dick's Sporting Goods in stopping sales of assault weapons to the public. As one of America's largest suppliers of guns, the safety of our communities depends on your good faith."
Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Thanks!"

Dick's Sporting Goods deserves a nod for discontinuing their sales of those weapons, I hope it's a trend. Maybe I should write one for Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops?

Without a doubt. Actually, I think it has pretty much happened already.

Sadly, I too feel that way. I don't have much faith left for elected leaders, too much duckin' and running for cover for my tastes but I'll just keep on yelling about to it to anyone who will stand still for thirty seconds or so.
Barbara's recommendation reminded me that petitions do work a hell of a lot better than before we had the interweebs. A push at retailers and manufacturers just might be a force to reckon with in this digital age. The government might ignore such pleas via petition but retailers are a softer target. Pun intended.

I don't think the issue is entirely forgotten....
I've been hearing about a lot of local and regional grass root type organizations that are making efforts to have reasonable conversations regarding gun laws. Granted, more momentum is needed...
