Over the past few months, the Trump administration has quietly been rolling out a Kafkaesque new processing policy for select categories of visas: If any fields on a form are left blank, it will automatically be rejected. Even if it makes no sense for the applicant to fill out that field.

For example, if “Apt. Number” is left blank because the immigrant lives in a house: rejected. Or if the field for a middle name is left blank because no middle name exists: rejected, too.

Ran into that when onboarding for a job recently. The standard form I filled out that attests my citizenship/right to work in USA now required NA to be entered in any unused field. The online system made this instruction clear and checked to make sure no fields were blank. But if I'd been doing a paper form I might have had trouble, apparently.

Tyranny of the clerks can be a problem with any bureaucracy, but this administration is just the one to dial it up for a purpose....
