A thoughtful opinion piece by a conservative.

Caught me by surprise.

One of the features of all the Ferguson discussion over the past few months is how tinny the comparisons to the civil-rights era have sounded. People have tried to link Ferguson to Selma and Jim Crow, but something is off.

That’s, in part, because we’ve moved from simplicity to ambiguity. The civil rights struggle was about as clear a conflict between right and wrong as we get in national life. The debate about Ferguson elicited complex reactions among most sensible people.

David Brooks is a class act - sensible, smart and pleasant. That being the case, he isn't exactly a conservative by today's definition. I'd peg him as a moderate Republican - a vanishing breed.

I may not agree with David Brooks on very much but at least he isn't some hair on fire conservative nutjob so prevalent these days in the Republican party. PBS News Hour is a favorite source over here for the news.

Yes, classism is the new racism. It's easier to rationalize that people are to blame for their class, while race is obviously an accident of birth.

But social mobility has been going down, while the rich grease the skids for kids of their own class. Accident of birth is very much alive as a determiner of life chances.

So today it's no longer fashionable to be disdain people because they are black.

Instead it is fashionable to disdain people because they are poor.

However due to the legacy of racism a much higher percentage of black people are poor than are white people.

So the end result is pretty much the same.

Black people get shit on more than whites.

No, I disdain people who rob, steal, and murder at a multiple of what any other race does and blame it on racism. Drop out of school and blame it on racism. Men abandon their children and blame it on racism.

Journalist can blame it on everybody else until the end of time and until blacks cut it out nothing is going to change.

That is reality boys.

I was taught, "Never judge a man 'til you walk a mile in his shoes."

How in the hell could YOU possibly know what it's like to be black?

I've watched black people succeed.......despite the hurdles they face.

This certainly is admirable.

However,

What purpose could denying said hurdles exist possibly serve?

I think it's a method of keeping them in place.
