That means that they have to win more than three quarters of the senate races to just pick up one seat. Winning two thirds would mean a loss of 3 seats. I am optimistic enough to believe that the backlash against Trump is enough to overcome the gerrymandering and retake the House.

I tend to agree with you but the uncertainty is the status of Trump a year from now. Resignation, impeachment or still in office. If he is still in office then the House can flip but not the Senate.

If he is still in office, but the investigation has shown clear wrongdoing, enough to plunge him below 30%, but the GOP Senators have been unable to grow a pair, that could flip the senate. It would have to be a perfect storm. The odds are good that the GOP leaders will remain eunuchs, but the other things are not as clear.
