This is one of the reasons conversations dealing with this subject have so little success. Comments like the above crop up all the time. Up until the school shootings of the past are not most offenders seemingly law abiding citizens? Kinda of hard to see into the future and be 100% correct all the time. But getting rid of high power, capacity weapons from getting into their hands would! (IMHO!)

I really wish you'd stop this, Pete. I'm getting really tired of the constant repetition of this ridiculous straw man.

Nobody is saying that eliminating assault weapons and hi-cap magazines will put an end to mass killings by deranged indiividuals. What the ban WILL accomplish is to make the means less available and the effects less extreme. What universal background checks WILL accomplish is to make the acquisition of firearms b y people who shouldn't have hem more difficult and, therefore, less widespread.

Neither is anyone proposing that the bans should be the sum total of our response. The ban is a necessary part of a whole complex of actions we need to take, the sort of actions the President outlined last week.
